Module 1: The Global Context

Objective:
By the end of the session the participants will have an understanding of globalization, the World Trade Organisation (WTO) and will have considered what key elements are important to commercial success
The key contents:

  • The global context
  • The Cambodian garment industry (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats)
  • Some examples of enterprise improvements
  • The Performance Improvement Consultative Committee

 

Module 2: Workplace Cooperation

Objective:
By the end of the session the participants will have an understanding of the nature and importance of workplace cooperation. Participants will be asked to identify key communication issues in their factory and design an action plan appropriate for their factory.

The key contents:

  • Workplace cooperation and its importance
  • Effective communication
  • Forms of workplace cooperation
  • Joint Consultation
  • Grievance procedure
  • Dispute resolution/negotiation
  • Collective bargaining agreements and information on freedom of association
  • Examples of factory-based improvements
  • Factory improvement plan (FIP)

 

Module 3: Quality

Objective:
By the end of the session the participants will have an understanding of how simple measures can improve quality. Participants will be asked to design a checklist of improvements that could be made in the factory. The final day of the module will see participants compare what ideas were successful and why some suggestions were not implemented.

  • Inspections and Audits
  • Storage and quality at the Lucky United factory
  • Product Care and Quality Management

Module 4: Occupational Safety and Health (OS&H)

Objective:
By the end of the session the participants will have an understanding OS&H issues and their importance. This will be reinforced through a practical exercise that allows the participants to identify issues of concern in the factory, apply them and discuss the results with the other participants.

The key contents:

  • General workplace conditions
  • OSH and implementing change
  • OSH committees
  • Welfare facilities
  • Lighting noise ventilation and temperature
  • Lighting noise ventilation and temperature checklists
  • Chemical safety
  • Machine guards
  • Fire and electrical safety
  • OSH and effective supervision 
  • Risk Mapping
  • Factory Improvement Plan (FIP)

 

Module 5: Productivity

Objective:
By the end of the session participants will have an understanding of how to increase productivity in their workplace. Participants will not be expected to enact all the measures but will be asked to draw up a priority plan of action that asks then to identify possible changes they may make to increase productivity.

  • Work station design
  • Training for Productivity
  • Line Balancing
  • Risk Mapping
  • Factory Improvement Plan (FIP)

 

Module 6: Human Resource and Working Conditions

Objective:
By the end of the session participants will have an understanding on issues relating to HR management and its importance for the success of the garment industry

The key contents:

  • Human Resource Management and HR Activities
  • Hiring for Workforce Flexibility
  • Induction  Process
  • Recruitment and Selection
  • Organisational Culture
  • Harassment and Discrimination in the Workplace 
  • Effective Supervision
  • Disciplining and Dismissing Employees
  • Rewarding for Opportunity, Motivation and Ability
  • Maternity Leave
  • Factory Improvement Plan (FIP)

 

Module 7: Continuous Improvement

Objective:
By the end of the session the participants will have a greater appreciation of the need for continuous improvement to systems at their factory.
The key contents:

  • Factory Presentations
  • Problems Encountered Implementing Changes
  • Definition and Importance of Continuous Improvement
  • Sustainable Improvement Plans
